Kathy Truong immigrated from Vietnam to the United States in 1979 and has lived in and around Portland, Oregon for most of her life. She attended Portland Public Schools while growing up and later studied nursing at both University of Portland and Walla Walla University. Truong currently works full time as a nurse while also caring for her three young children.

Truong begins the interview by speaking about her family's immigration from Vietnam to Oregon and recalling what it was like growing up in North Portland during the 1980s and 1990s. Even at a young age, Truong remembers being called racial slurs and generally feeling unwelcome in Portland. She goes on to talk about how her parents supported their family even though they could not speak any English. From there, she discusses her decision to attend college and study nursing. Truong concludes the interview by talking a bit about the Chinese New Year Celebration.
